Kodiak 1995-98

Hunt 1

My friend Dean with a nice buck.  Dean, myself, and my brother-in-law Gene had a fun few day hunt behind Saltry lake.  You can see more pictures of this hunt on Dean's web site.

Hunt 2 - Part 1 of 3

Here I am on top of a mountain near Kiliuda Bay in November.   We slept (and crabbed) on a 110 foot crab boat during the night and hunted during the day.

Hunt 2 - Part 2 of 3

A deer I got during the Kiliuda Bay trip.  This was one of those rare long shots.

Hunt 2 - Part 3 of 3

A few crab from our trip.  More pictures from my Kiliuda Bay trip can be found here.

Hunt 3 - Part 1 of 3

A view of Saltry Cove from behind Saltry Lake while I was on a multi-day solo hunt.

Hunt 3 - Part 2 of 3

A deer taken from behind Saltry Lake on a solo hunt.  I had to pack him out several miles including about 2 hours in the dark hiking Saltry Lake's shoreline while trying to ignore any shadows that resembled brown bears!

Hunt 3 - Part 3 of 3

Here's my route as tracked by the Global Positioning satellite System.

Hunt 4 - Part 1 of 4

Hiking up on a mountain ridge near Saltry Cove.  Nothing beats the view in Kodiak on a sunny day!

Hunt 4 - Part 2 of 4

Here's my friend Mark taking a break from glassing for Kodiak bucks.  Shortly after this picture, we spotted a nice buck below us...

Hunt 4 - Part 3 of 4

Here's the buck we spotted.  I had to hike out along the narrow ridge you see in the first picture of this section.  Then I had to drop almost vertically down into the bowl from above the buck.  I was able to sneak to the within shooting distance and shot the buck from the rocks just above the grassy area in this top of this picture.

Hunt 4 - Part 4 of 4

Here's a picture of the same deer from a different angle.

Hunt 5 - Part 1 of 4

Part of the 18 mile ATV trail to Saltry Cove.  Look closely and you can see my friend Craig on an ATV.

Hunt 5 - Part 2 of 4

Have camp will travel...  On a deer hunting trip with my friend Craig.

Hunt 5 - Part 3 of 4

Craig with his first Kodiak deer.  Another graduate of Rick's hunting boot camp.

Hunt 5 - Part 4 of 4

Time for the dinner of champions... freeze dried food.  It's amazing how good this stuff tastes after a hard day's workout.

Hunt 6

My brother-in-law Gene with a buck he got behind Buskin Lake.  We liked hunting behind Buskin Lake for quick one day hunts.  The only problem was avoiding the high concentration of bears around the lake.

Hunt 7 - Part 1 of 5

On a hunt with my friend Steve.  If you haven't figured it out yet; my style of hunting is to drive as far back on an ATV as possible, then hike back in several miles carrying camp on your back as you go.  Obviously I have to bone out the meat right in the field.

Hunt 7 - Part 2 of 5

Here's my friend Steve fording one of the many rivers in Kodiak.   ATVing in Kodiak is incredible; there are hundreds of miles of trails covering every conceivable type of terrain.

Hunt 7 - Part 3 of 5

Steve taking a break as we side-hilled just below a ridge.  Side-hilling is very tough on the ankles and calves!

Hunt 7 - Part 4 of 5

While hunting for deer, we saw two mountain goats and were able to get within a couple hundred yards of them.  The goats were grazing on the ridge right behind Steve in this picture.

Hunt 7 - Part 5 of 5

You can see on our topo map where we saw the goats.

Misc - Part 1 of 9

Elk hunting on Raspberry Island requires lots of glassing, climbing and hiking.

Misc - Part 2 of 9

I ran across this small band of goats during a deer hunting trip.  I had a few friend escort me on ATVs up the trail on Kashevaroff Mountain (AKA Backbreak Mountain).  This ATV trail is for experts only!  We drove towards Center Mountain until we ran out of trail.  My friends returned to Kodiak and I headed off on foot for a several day solo hunt.

Misc - Part 3 of 9

If I remember correctly when this picture was taken, my friend Dean and I were "trying" to set up our tent in the middle of an alder patch on a severe incline half-way up a mountain in the snow.  We ran out of daylight and couldn't find a decent camping spot.  Needless to say, our camping spot was less than optimal.

Misc - Part 4 of 9

Climb, climb, climb...

Misc - Part 5 of 9

Christopher and Dad on a rabbit hunting trip.  We didn't see any rabbits, so we stopped for lunch and had some target practice with the .22 rifle.

Misc - Part 6 of 9

Missy eating breakfast during a deer hunting trip with Dad.  'Twas a little cold in the morning, which always makes it hard to get motivated because you'd rather stay in the warm sleeping bag!

Misc - Part 7 of 9

We take a short break while hiking up higher to look for deer.

Misc - Part 8 of 9

Missy and Dad on a camping trip.  You can probably tell it's summer... yes, Kodiak has a few bugs.

Misc - Part 9 of 9

Look closely, what do you see?  Hint:  it's closer than you think.
